Communications Manager/Technician - Iraq

We require a Communications Manager to work on a consultancy basis in Iraq and work as part of an Ex Military Team. The appointment will have responsibilities, which are not limited to, but include:

  • First line fault repair includes, but not limited to, repair of broken connectors on equipment and cables, repair of ancillary equipment – microphones, loudspeakers etc.

  • Testing of radios using a radio communications test set (Marconi 2955) for specification checks and minor setup alignments, deal with faulty equipment.

  • Programming of radios using a PC and manufacturer software.

  • Antennas to be installed and maintained are VHF dipole and yagi with LDF 4-50 feeder up to a height of 60m on masts, towers and buildings (so must be a competent climber!).

  • Test antennas and cables using a thruline VSWR meter.

  • Make coaxial cable with BNC and N type connectors on a variety of cables.

  • Install HF antennas and equipment with sloping V or dipole antennas.

  • Install satellite equipment for internet use, Vsat terminals from Nokia or Hughes with 1.2m dishes.

Also we require the person to be able to do/have the following:

  • A good working knowledge of computer networks, gateways, routers and wireless, know how to install Ethernet cables and hubs/switches.

  • A good working knowledge of MS Office, Win XP and Office XP is required, particularly outlook express, outlook and Access.

  • Know how to set up a pc from scratch, load windows, office, printers etc. and setup email accounts.

  • A knowledge of AVL (automatic vehicle location) systems

  • Needs to be able to work alone and on own initiative and implement preventative procedures before a crisis develops.

A guide of some of the equipment we currently use, which is not limited to, includes:

Radio

  • HF – Barrett and Codan, base station and mobile

  • VHF – Various manufacturers, PMR radio, talkthroughs, base stations and mobile

  • GPS tracking interfaces

  • Antenna and feeder installation, HF systems and VHF repeater systems

Data

  • Satellite links for email, voice and internet, RBgan, Mini M, Linkstar (Vsat type equipment)

  • PCs running Win XP, Office XP Pro

Telephone

  • Standard GSM

  • Thuraya

  • Iridium

  • Voip

  • Mini M

This person will also, from time to time, be required to undertake CP duties.

Salary – from £250-300 per day (Tax Free) – consultancy contract working minimum 56 day tours (possibly a 2 month on – 2 month off rotation), Accommodation, Insurance etc provided. The position is available early April.

You must be fluent in English, have an ability to work under pressure and to deadlines, be able to multi-task, have an eye for detail and a sharp, enquiring mind, be efficient and organised, dedication and loyalty is also extremely important to us.
